Hispanic Counseling Center Receives Grant from TJX Foundation

Posted: 09/05/2007

Hempstead, NY—Hispanic Counseling Center, Long Island’s premier specialty agency serving Latino families, received a $5,000 grant from the TJX Foundation to help provide mental health treatment to clients who are uninsured or unable to pay. Spanish speakers have limited options for effective treatment in mental health, since it relies so heavily on verbal communication. HCC is unique in being the only agency in the county licensed by the State to provide mental health treatment in a fully bilingual, bi-cultural setting. Hispanic Counseling Center is extremely grateful for support that the TXJ Foundation has provided for the past few years, which has allowed the agency to extend the number of therapy hours for clients and reduce the waiting list for mental health treatment. TJX Companies stores include TJ Maxx, Marshalls, A.J. Wright, and HomeGoods.

Hispanic Counseling Center is a multi-service agency in Hempstead that provides fully bilingual treatment and prevention services for chemical dependency, mental illness, and many youth and family services in a single, one-stop location. It is the only agency in Nassau County licensed by the State to provide these services in an entirely bilingual, bicultural setting and in an environment of hope and encouragement for people working toward a constructive, self-sustaining way of life.

Hempstead, NY—Hispanic Counseling Center is pleased to announce that it has received a grant from Bank of America to support the agency’s programs that serve school age children and at-risk youth. This grant addresses the need in the Hispanic community for bilingual after-school services that can enhance academic performance through tutoring, homework help, counseling, and prevention services. The Teen Drop-In Center incorporates recreational activity, academic enrichment, cultural arts and technology, with crisis counseling and gang prevention services. The Teen Center services are offered without charge. Because of the support of the Bank of America, HCC is able to help sustain these programs and provide the educational and cultural enrichment that distinguishes HCC’s After-School programs.
