We Got Splashed!

Splashes of Hope, a Huntington, NY non-profit, has been splashing hope and healing via color all over the country, and in March they donated murals to brighten the after-school classroom and lift the spirits of the children receiving services at Hispanic Counseling Center. The looks on the faces of the children as they entered the room expressed their feelings. The murals of cheery outdoor scenes “make me feel like I’m outside,” one said. To see photos of the murals, please visit our Facebook page. The artists plan to return soon to help the adolescents in the Teen Drop-In Center with painting their space.
HCC Receives $10,000 grant from The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation

HCCwas recently awarded a $10,000 grant from The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation in support of our After School Enrichment & Prevention Program, which provides after-school tutoring, prevention, recreation, and socialization services to Hempstead area children and adolescents, in a bilingual/bicultural context. The Foundation’s mission is to build strong and vibrant communities, improve the quality of life, and make a positive difference. We thank them for helping HCC to make a difference for many needy families.
HCC Receives $2,000 Grant from Laura B. Vogler Foundation

The Laura B. Vogler Foundation made a grant to support the agency’s efforts to assist immigrant parents as they struggle to help their children progress and succeed in school. The Parent Education/Training Initiative provides parenting groups, information, workshops and assistance for parents and children.
Grant from Newsday Charities Supports Program for At-Risk Teens

Thanks to Newsday Charities, a McCormick Foundation Fund, the Teen Drop-In Center is able to continue providing services that meet the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs of disadvantaged adolescents in Hempstead. HCC received a $15,000 grant March 29, 2011 at the grant reception held at the Long Island Children’s Museum. On behalf of the families we serve, HCC is very grateful to be part of the “Newsday Charities family.”
HCC Receives $13,165 grant from United Way of Long Island in support of the Mental Health Outpatient

HCCwas recently awarded a $13,165 grant from United Way of Long Island in support of our Mental Health Program, which provides services to Nassau and Suffolk residents including treatment for adults and children with emotional distress or psychiatric disorders, in a bilingual/bicultural context.
United Way of Long Island awarded 94 grants to local nonprofit agencies, totaling $1,390,405, and continues to pursue funding that allows our nonprofit community partners provide critical services to Long Islanders in need.
TJX Companies Support Mental Health Services

HCC is grateful for the ongoing support of the TJX Companies' TJX Foundation, which provided a $5,000 grant for the HCC Mental Health Outpatient Program, targeting the needs of disadvantaged families affected by domestic violence, especially the children who witness and are affected by abuse.
TD Charitable Foundation Supports After-School Program

The TD Charitable Foundation made a grant of $2,500 to support the After School Prevention and Enrichment Program at HCC. Representatives from TD Bank presented the check to Gladys Serrano and HCC Board members at the agency’s November 5 benefit luncheon.

Macy's Gives Grant for Teen Drop-in Center

Macy’s provided $5,000 to support the services of the Teen Drop-In Center, a prevention program for at-risk adolescents that is free for families and served 80 teens and their 110 parents in the past year with a range of educational, recreation, cultural, and preventive services.
HCC Receives $2,200 CVS Caremark Community Grant

September, 2010—HCC was selected to receive a grant through the CVS Caremark Community Grants 2010 grant application process. Grants were awarded to organizations that share a common interest with CVS Caremark of supporting programs for the uninsured, which help to make health services affordable and easy to access. The goal of the program is to provide relief for both adults and children who lack medical insurance to get the proper medical attention needed.
Bank of America Charitable Foundation Supports After-School Programs

The funds support the agency’s many services for working families with children age 6-17 who attend after-school activities that promote academic achievement and wellness.
Grant From Nassau County Bar Association WE CARE Fund

July, 2010-The Nassau County Bar Association WE CARE Fund has awarded a grant of $3,000 to help defray some of the cost of HCC’s Parent Education/Training Initiative. This program provides workshops for immigrant parents to help them become their children’s educational advocate, by training parents about how to work with the educational system and how to help their children succeed, including aspects of education law.
HCC Thanks MCF Greentree Foundation Good Neighbor Fund

July, 2010- HCC is proud to be a recipient of a $7,500 grant from the Manhasset Community Fund’s 2010 MCF Greentree Foundation Good Neighbor Fund. This grant supports increased education and training for immigrant parents to enhance their parenting skills and their children’s educational success. These funds will help us to work with these families so that they can become more informed; more involved, and take a more active role in their children’s progress. Hundreds of families will benefit from this program this year.
Reading Reflections and Girl Scout Troop 1541 Create Library of Books for Children

Reading Reflections, a charity begun by teenagers on Long Island, has collected many boxes of books that were selected specifically for the teens and children attending HCC’s programs. To accommodate their generosity, HCC created a reading room/library for the children to use when they come to HCC after school. Books will also be available for children to take home. Thanks to Jeremy Schneck and his friends for collecting books for Hispanic Counseling Center! Jeremy also connected HCC with Junior Girl Scout Troop 1541 which donated hundreds of new and gently used books for the children of HCC, completing the project to earn their bronze award. The girl scouts were in 5th grade. They collected the used books through several book drives. The new books were collected by hosting a bowling event for younger girl scouts. The Junior Girl Scouts requested new books be donated by all who attended the bowling event.

Grant from Federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

Hempstead, NY— HCC received notification of $200,000 in funding from SAMHSA to provide mental health treatment to clients with serious mental illness who are uninsured or underinsured. This program is designed to prevent re-hospitalization and enable clients to become more self-sufficient members of society. Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy was instrumental in the awarding of the grant.

Suffolk County Grant for Services

Hempstead, NY— HCC thanks Suffolk Legislator Tom Barraga for sponsoring a $5,000 grant to help support mental health services at our Bay Shore clinic. Since receiving the state license to provide mental health services in Suffolk, HCC has experienced growing demand for these services and has developed a thriving practice. We are grateful to the legislature and the community for their support.

HCC Is Approved Provider of Supplemental Educational Services

HCC was approved by the NYS Department of Education as a provider of Supplemental Educational Services beginning with the 2009-2010 academic year. Students at Hempstead High School may receive free tutoring at HCC in English language arts (including reading), and/or mathematics in order to help them achieve New York’s learning standards. Tutoring is provided at HCC by certified teachers after school. Sign up information for parents is available at the high school. Supplemental Educational Services are funded through the federal No Child Left Behind Act. HCC is committed to helping the youth of our community to meet their goals and succeed in school.
HCC Receives Kinship Caregiver Grant from Office of Children & Family Services

Hempstead, NY— Hispanic Counseling Center is proud to announce its new Kinship Caregiver Program to provide a comprehensive range of services for families in which children are cared for by relatives when their parents do not live in the home. Services are coordinated with the Nassau County Department of Social Services, Department of Senior Citizen Affairs, Youth Board, and the National Committee of Grandparents for Children’s Rights, and other community-based organizations. The program provides information for kinship care families about the resources and services available to them and access to those services that families need and are eligible for, such as financial advocacy, TANF and Medicaid benefits, legal assistance, mental health counseling, support groups, child care, after-school care, workshops, and parenting education. Children in kinship care will receive appropriate services to help them adapt successfully in their peer, family, and school relationships.

Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation Supports After-School Enrichment & Prevention Services

Hempstead, NY— Hispanic Counseling Center received a $10,000 grant from Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation to support After-School Enrichment & Prevention Services for children and adolescents. Services are designed to enhance academic performance, to prevent involvement in high-risk behaviors, to address issues of physical and mental health, and provide support for parents through workshops, training and intergenerational cultural activities. TJX Foundation Supports Mental Health Services For Families Affected by Domestic Violence

Hempstead, NY— HCC is grateful for continued support from the TJX Foundation for The Mental Health Program for Children Who Witness Domestic Violence. This program offers education and mental health treatment to the youth and children, with the goal of ending the cycle of violence. The victim parent receives therapeutic services as well, along with access to concrete services to support family recovery. HCC promotes protective factors for both child and parent that reduce the likelihood of victimization. Services are provided at the Hempstead and Bay Shore clinics with a focus on targeting low-income Hispanic women and children. The TJX Companies, Inc., which funds the TJX Foundation, is the leading off-price retailer of apparel and home fashions in the United States and worldwide.

Cinderella Program Grant from National Grid for New HCC Building

Adelphi Honors Student Teaches Computer Literacy at HCC

Hempstead, NY— HCC thanks Adelphi University student Matthew Sanfilippo for volunteering to teach adolescents in the Teen Drop-In Center about computer literacy through the auspices of Community Computer Coverage, a nonprofit initiative established by Matthew as part of Adelphi’s Levermore Global Scholars Program. Teens at HCC learned how to write resumes and construct web sites. “Through the classes, students build their self-esteem and learn valuable technical skills necessary in today’s Web-based world,” said Matthew Sanfilippo. Community Computer Coverage has established three computer labs in the nearby community. The Teen Drop-In Center at HCC provides recreational activity, academic enrichment, cultural arts and technology, with crisis counseling and gang prevention services.

Hispanic Counseling Center Receives Grant from Bank of America Charitable Foundation

Hempstead, NY— Hispanic Counseling Center (HCC), Long Island’s premier specialty agency providing comprehensive professional services for Latino families, received a generous $25,000 grant from Bank of America Charitable Foundation. HCC is very proud and grateful to be the first organization on Long Island to receive a grant given in memory of Elena Perez, who was a loyal friend to the Latino community. The funds will be used to support improvement of the agency’s technology and telecommunications infrastructure as it undergoes expansion to new buildings in Hempstead and in Bay Shore. These improvements will allow the agency and its staff to work more efficiently and cost effectively to serve the needs of individuals and families.

Hispanic Counseling Center Receives Grant from Ronald McDonald House Charities

Hempstead, NY— Hispanic Counseling Center (HCC) is very grateful to Ronald McDonald House Charities for a grant of $25,000 to support the agency’s after-school programs and Teen Drop-In Center, serving approximately 110 children ages 6-18 with after-school tutoring, enrichment, recreation, prevention activities, and summer day camp. The Teen Drop-In Center does not charge for participation and the camp and after school programs charge very low rates for working parents. Donations and grants are critical for the continuation of these very successful programs. The majority of children and teens who attend the School Aged Child Care, After School Tutoring, Teen Drop-in Center and summer camp are predominantly Hispanic, from low-income families, many of whom are recently arrived immigrants and who live at or below the Federally established poverty level. Teens participate in community service projects, such as volunteering to create recipes and prepare meals for patients residing at Ronald McDonald House.

State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos Secures Grant to Support Hispanic Counseling Center

Hempstead, NY— Hispanic Counseling Center (HCC), Long Island’s premier specialty agency providing comprehensive professional services for Latino families, is grateful to be the recipient of a $50,000 grant secured by State Senator Dean Skelos which will support the agency’s Mental Health Outpatient Clinic.
These funds will allow the agency to continue to provide comprehensive Mental Health Outpatient Treatment services to needy Latino families, the majority of which are very low-income, recently arrived immigrants who turn to Hispanic Counseling Center to receive our expert care in a supportive bilingual environment that attends to their needs, with caring and sensitivity to their culture and values.

Newsday Charities Awards Grant to Hispanic Counseling Center

Hempstead, NY- Hispanic Counseling Center,received a $15,000 grant from Newsday Charities, a fund of the McCormick Tribune Foundation. The grant will support the agency’s Prevention and Enrichment Program for youth in our Teen Drop-in Center, which provides adolescents with a safe, supervised haven for recreation and learning during the critical after-school and early evening hours, thus providing an antidote for anti-social behavior and gang involvement by local youth.
The grant award was presented at Newsday Charities Community Night, a special reception held at the Long Island Children’s Museum in Uniondale, organized by Newsday Charities and which brought together all grant recipient non-profit agencies from throughput Long Island, along with officials from Newsday, including Tim Knight, Newsday Publisher, President & CEO, members of Newsday Charities grant committee, as well as private and corporate donors. HCC is privileged to be among the select group of grant recipients and is very grateful to Newsday Charities for its continued support of Hispanic Counseling Center.

Chemical Dependency Program is Designated a Five Star Program by NYS OASAS

Hempstead, NY—New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) has awarded Hispanic Counseling Center its Five Star Program Award, recognizing the excellence of the agency’s Chemical Dependency Outpatient Program. To achieve this distinction a treatment program must have two consecutive substantial compliance certificate reviews; performance must fall with the top quartile of its group, and units of service per direct care staff must be above 1,000. The HCC program provides its clients with an intensive treatment modality tailored to individual needs, with group, individual, family and marital therapy, along with chemical dependency education and parent/family prevention workshops. Like all HCC programs, this program emphasizes a family centered focus and is provided in a fully bilingual and bicultural setting.
HCC is very proud of this achievement and congratulates Associate Director, Irene Ingham and Program Coordinator, Elsa Perez, and all the staff of the Chemical Dependency Program for their hard work and dedication to excellence in treatment.
