Noteworthy Details

26 Weekly sessions are held virtually on Zoom or in person at the HCC offices in Hempstead.

Male clients meet weekly as a group; female clients accused of violent behavior meet individually with the counselor on a weekly basis.

The Reason

Domestic violence – whether it be physical, emotional, economic, sexual, or psychological – is a major problem in society and in the Hispanic community. The Hispanic Counseling Center’s BIP-DV program attempts to break through patterns of violence, secrecy and denial and help perpetrators confront their negative attitudes and violent behavior.

The Solution

The program uses cognitive behavioral therapy techniques of questioning and dialogue to help participants identify, analyze and reflect on negative ideas that often lead to instances of battering and abuse. The Duluth Domestic Abuse Intervention Project provides the general structure for the program.

The Implementation

Clients are mandated by governmental institutions such as the courts and the probation department. Some clients are self-referred, and others are advised by attorneys to participate. Most clients are from Nassau County; others are from Suffolk County. Potential clients contact the agency for screening. Accepted clients are informed of the financial and time commitments required in the program.

Testimonial

“My life has really changed. I now see things from a different perspective. In the DV group each case is different, but we all have the same problem. I looked forward to the weekly sessions because it gave me the opportunity to share my situation with the members of the group and find solutions to the problems that I, and the other members of the group, were experiencing.”
