The Reason

The program offers support to children who have recently arrived in the United States from other countries, Newcomers. They arrive with a variety of educational and linguistic backgrounds and diverse social and emotional needs. The program is also for students with interrupted formal education (SIFE), students who have experienced interrupted education due to war, civil unrest, migration or other factors; who have never had the opportunity to participate in any type of schooling before entering school; who have experienced limited education in their home countries due to lack of resources.

The Solution

ESAP develops solutions to the challenges faced by newcomer students and encourages collaborative planning to help students succeed. Parents are offered educational workshops and parent support groups.

The Implementation

The After-School program is within Hempstead High School, students participate in structured and supervised educational services after school hours, such as tutoring, youth development, and school resources to help meet learning standards and succeed in school. Program teachers designed effective lesson plans to support students in academic subjects and English as a new language and provided students who may have experienced interrupted or inconsistent formal education with reading and writing in their native language.

Testimonial

“My name is Javier Gutiérrez. I am very grateful for the afternoon program. I have been coming frequently. The videos and classes are helping me learn English. I also want to thank my teachers because with their support I have been able to pass my classes. Thank you.”
