Nurturing Parenting Skills Program (NPP)

Program Overview

The Nurturing Parenting Skills Program offers parents the opportunity to improve their life and parenting skills in order to fulfil their roles as protectors and guides of their children, replacing inappropriate parenting practices with knowledge and skills that help men and women be more effective parents.

The Nurturing Parenting Skills Program is a 16 week program that builds parenting skills as an alternative to abusive and neglectful parenting and child-rearing practices.

Weekly sessions are held virtually on Zoom or in person at the HCC offices in Hempstead. Men and women participate in the program. There are two groups: one for parents of younger, elementary school-aged children, and the other for parents of teens and adolescents.

Funding by Nassau County District Attorney’s office.

The Reason

Parents face challenges that can lead them to lose custody of their children, be in danger of losing custody, and cause them to be neglectful, or provoke them to react to problems with their children using violence. The Nurturing Parenting Skills Program teaches parents alternatives to negative behavior in raising their children and offers guidance in developing solid parenting skills.

The Solution

The Nurturing Parenting Skills Program uses an evidence-based, psychoeducational approach to help parents become more effective and responsible caregivers. The in-group sharing of actions and experiences creates a positive dynamic that increases clients’ awareness and knowledge of how to be better parents.

The Implementation

Clients are mandated by governmental agencies such as Family Court and Child Protective Services to take the parenting program. Some clients are self-referred. Potential clients contact the agency to begin the screening and intake process. Complementary services such as substance abuse treatment and mental health counseling may be offered to clients and, if necessary, their children.

Testimonial

“From the parenting program I’ve learned how to analyze situations and think before reacting in a way that could have negative consequences. I also learned much from the experiences and the ideas of the other clients in the group. When I heard about their problems, I realized that my situation wasn’t as difficult and complicated as what they were facing. This gave me a sense of perspective. The parenting program helped me to be more human, more understanding of others.”
